Life’s about to get a little bit sweeter for our Northlanders.
This Monday, Sept. 30, McLain’s Market + Bakery is opening its sixth metro location at 1720 Swift St., NKC on the groundfloor of The Oxbow.
With locations spanning as far west as Lawrence and as far south as Stanley, the move has been a long time coming — over 70+ years if you count its inception as a family-run Waldo bakery in 1945, and a decade in the making since its current owners took over in 2014.
“We’ve always had two major requests. It’s always been to go to North Kansas City, north of the river, and to go to Lee’s Summit — [NKC] was the lucky one,” said Mollie Lothman, Managing Partner at McLain’s.
“We connected with the people who built the Oxbow before they had finished [...] and they were really excited to have us as tenants. We had just signed a lease to open a store in Stanley in south Overland Park, so it was kind of unique timing that we ended up signing to open two stores, one on Travis Street, one on Swift Street, so close together.”
That’s right. In case you’re not keeping up with McLain’s Instagram (if so, you’re missing out), it’s been a serendipitous point of pride for cupcookie fans everywhere — as one commenter shared, “If T&T don’t get their wedding cake from you, I’d be shocked 💕🦋.”
Along with all of its usual amenities, like its boutique mini-market, McLain’s NKC will also boast a larger grab-and-go section and a full-fledged “cakery,” something only found in its flagship + Lawrence locations.
