KCtoday_Kansas City Chalk & Walk Festival

Fill your long weekend with a little color.

Color outside the lines this Labor Day weekend at KC Chalk & Walk (Saturday, Aug. 30-Sunday, Aug. 31), when City Market’s streets become a free living gallery.

More than 60 artists will cover the pavement with KC-themed murals, eye-tricking illusions, and a made-in-real-time sculpture by Mike Elder. Add live music, street performers, and a kid-friendly Creative Corridor, and you’ve got Kansas City’s most colorful block party — the perfect addition to your weekly farmers market run.

News Notes

Travel

Athens for $679, Dublin for $532, and Turks and Caicos for $398 — these round-trip deals prove KCI is a budget-friendly launchpad, according to travel influencer Lesley Riley. Time to request PTO, pack your carry-on, and see which destinations you can score. (FOX4)

Open

Barnes & Noble has landed in south OP’s BluHawk development, neighbors with J.Crew Factory and AdventHealth Sports Park. Looking for your next read? Don’t forget KC’s 20+ indie bookstores while you browse the bestseller wall. (Johnson County Post)

Shop

Starting tomorrow, Aug. 28, Missouri will no longer tax diapers, certain feminine hygiene products, or incontinence supplies. Stock up for your family and consider grabbing a few extras to donate to local nonprofits’ wishlists, like HappyBottoms. (FOX4)

Eat

Pizza Tascio is expanding north, opening its seventh metro shop near Barry Road this November. Expect New York-style slices plus house-made gelato. Our order? You can never go wrong with the generously topped ricotta + hot honey “Red Tascio.” (Kansas City Star)

Biz

De Soto’s Panasonic EV battery plant is getting a mega neighbor: a planned $3.1 billion data center campus. It’s the latest in KC’s tech boom, joining Meta’s new center and the water-efficient Edged Data facility that opened in the Northland last year. (Johnson County Post)

The Buy

Self-care isn’t all spa days and forest bathing — although we do love a nice hot stone massage. More often than not, it’s the simple things like prioritizing rest, practicing good hygiene, and practicing mindfulness. Elevate your self-care rituals with these five products:

🫧 Treat your skin to a little TLC with a Moroccan exfoliating glove that gently removes dead skin + cleans pores.
💧Elevate your favorite reading or journaling space with an aroma diffuser and lavender essential oils.
🛏️ Look forward to snuggling into bed every night when you score this jersey knit sheet set at up to 75% off.
💤 Pair your new sheets with the Nodpod gentle weighted sleep mask that’s described as “a hug for your head.”
🧥 When you’re craving comfort + relaxation, don this ultra-soft Barefoot Dreams cardigan that’s over 50% off.

It’s a love story, baby, just say, “Yes”

“Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.” That’s how Taylor Swift announced her engagement to Travis Kelce via Instagram. While we raise a glass to the happy couple, consider this Kansas City’s bid to host what will undoubtedly be the wedding of the century.

The Wrap

Not to take away from this beautiful moment, but one of my favorite KCtoday stories came during the filming of “Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story,” when we couldn’t resist recasting the Hallmark flick with our own Kansas City spin. From Jackie Nguyen as the leading lady to a Z-Man-fueled meet-cute at Joe’s BBQ, it was peak KC magic (if you ignore the haunting Photoshop).
