Kansas City’s (unofficial) fifth season: Pothole Pandemonium

Welcome to pothole season, Kansas City.

You’ve probably been so distracted with salting your driveway and avoiding frostbite that you almost forgot what time of year it is... unless you were one of the unlucky souls on I-435 last week. Yikes.

This month’s arctic blast meant an early start for our city’s unofficial fifth season, but don’t worry — your dutiful City Editors have the 411 on weathering these rocky roads.
  • First (and most obvious), check your tires. Under-inflated or worn tires are more likely to be damaged by our gnarly potholes.
  • You already know the drill: swerve around the crater, shake your fist at the sky + tell the org that owns the road. You can see what potholes have already been reported and share more on the myKCMO website.
  • MoDOT is on the prowl, but rainy conditions mean any recent patchwork will have its pitfalls. Dry skies in this week’s forecast means better luck for road crews (and you) in the coming days. Patience, grasshopper.
Follow these tips and you may still pop a tire — it’s the trade in we make for living somewhere without hurricanes and wildfires. Our one comfort: the city’s doing more than just patching up the problem. In 2023 alone, crews resurfaced ~470 miles, with more on the way.

News Notes
Sports
  • Super Bowl LVIII, here we come. After yesterday’s win over the Baltimore Ravens, the Chiefs will face off against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, Feb. 11. Not sure how to prep for the big game? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with a week of tips, tricks + local Red Kingdom recommendations.
Civic
  • KCMO is now one of 85 cities that have banned source of income discrimination. The new ordinance forbids landlords from rejecting tenets solely based on how they pay rent, protecting those who use Section 8 vouchers or other government assistance. (KCUR)
Development
  • Prarie Village’s shuttered Macy’s (4000 W. 71st St.) has waited years for development plans to take off. Now, the 125,000-sqft space is part of a new vision that includes a supermarket, a 4,000-sqft restaurant + three other retail tenants. (Kansas City Star)
Real Estate
  • We’re not done talking housing just yet. A new study shows KCMO’s rising rent prices are outpacing all but four other US cities. Where the rest of the country’s monthly dues declined, rent in the Heartland has had an 8.72% year-over-year increase. (Kansas City Business Journal)
Sports
Cause
  • Travis Kelce and breakfast company Kodiak are donating 25,000 hot meals to hundreds of local families. This partnership continues to support one of the Chiefs star’s favorite philanthropies, Operation Breakthrough, which will be distributing the donation. (FOX4)
Sports
  • Think we see too much Taylor during Chiefs games? Think again. A fan created this data visualization of how often the pop icon has been caught on camera during this year’s playoffs — a measly 0.46% of airtime.
Closing
  • Bookworms beware — the original branch of the Johnson County Library, The Antioch Library, has officially closed. Its successor, Merriam Plaza (6120 Slater St.), will be ready for checkout starting Wednesday, March 20. (Johnson County Post)

From the editor
As a life-long Kansas Citian, potholes are the bread and butter of Midwestern small talk. In fact, we love to reference them just about everywhere, like in conversations with the mayor or picking our monthly ins and outs.
