The first Friday of every month is basically a holiday in Kansas City.

First Fridays feature local artists, local food, and local retail — right up our alley. Not sure where to go, how to park, or what to see? As always, we have you covered.

The Crossroads Arts District transforms into one big creative energy on First Fridays.

Editor Bella’s pick: Strolling through Art Alley to see the talented graffiti artists’ work.

🍻 Eat + drink:
  • There is no shortage of craft breweries along Brewer’s Alley.

  • Take the KC Streetcar — it’s free.
  • Street parking is available (the earlier you park the better).

  • Have you ever wanted to witness the “World’s Largest Circus Under The Biggest Big Top On Earth?” Now you can — at Oak Park Mall in Overland Park. The Garden Bros Nuclear Circus is bringing its spectacle to town from Thursday, April 27 to Sunday, April 30. Buy tickets. (Shawnee Mission Post)

  • 475,000. That’s how many people watched the KC Current vs Portland Thorns match last weekend, making it the most watched NWSL regular season game in history. Talk about girl power.
Traffic
  • Get ready for 90 days of single lane driving on US 69 Highway. Lane closures begin northbound at the 151st Street bridge beginning today. This is a part of the 69Express project, which is adding express toll lanes and 11 noise walls. (Blue Valley Post)

Fun Fact
  • Kansas City barbecue spot Arthur Bryant’s was featured not once, but twice on “Ted Lasso.” The show, starring Kansas Citian Jason Sudeikis, shows the exterior of the restaurant as Ted’s computer background. Relatable.
Drink
  • An electric wine opener is one of those inexpensive kitchen gadgets that you don’t know how you lived without once you get one. We especially love this one for its sleek design and ergonomic grip. To upgrade your wine even further, this set includes an automatic wine aerator and reusable vacuum stopper.

Results of Kansas City’s 2023 municipal election

Picture of KC skyline from @rodriduq
It’s a beautiful day for election results.
The primary election on Tuesday, April 4 included both City Council candidates and local tax questions. While KC voters will still have to choose between the top two candidates for each district come June, four decisions were made regarding recreational marijuana and short-term rentals.

Should KCMO add a 3% tax on recreational marijuana sales? Kansas Citians voted yes.

Should KCMO impose a 7.5% tax on short-term rentals that don’t currently have to pay the city’s Convention and Tourism Tax? Voters approved this tax with 61% in favor.

Should KCMO increase the fee of an occupied room from $1.50 to $3 on all hotels, motels, and short-term rentals? Voters were 62% in favor vs. 38% opposed.

Should Jackson County add a 3% tax on recreational marijuana sales? The answer is yes according to 67% of voters.
