The Brush Creek Corridor is getting a makeover, with various projects to improve the area like the new MLK Pedestrian Bridge and Brush Creek Cultural Heritage Trail revitalization. Let’s dive into the happenings throughout the corridor.

MLK Pedestrian Bridge

What: $2.8 million in federal funding is secured to build a new pedestrian bridge — connecting the community north of the creek to the 15 and the Mahomies Playground at the Martin Luther King, Jr. Park.

Where: Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Woodland Avenue

Timeline: The project is currently undergoing early design stages. Construction start is TBD.

Brush Creek Cultural Heritage Trail Project

What: The revitalization of this trail is meant to act as a series of interconnected nodes that tell the story of the American Civil Rights Movement and the Black experience in KC through art installations. See the project elements.

Where: Paseo Boulevard Bridge as the western boundary, through to the confluence with Blue River as the eastern boundary. Emanual Cleaver II Boulevard acts as the northern boundary, and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Blue Parkway the southern boundary.

Timeline: Multiple steps of this project are currently underway — see where it’s at.

Emmanuel Cleaver II Boulevard Proposal

What: If approved, this ordinance would upgrade some existing lanes and install new bike lanes through seven blocks of Emmanuel Cleaver II Boulevard.

Where: 47th Street and Emmanuel Cleaver II Boulevard

Timeline: Details from the Kansas City Council Transportation subcommittee are coming soon.
