Hey, Kansas Citians — Winter is on the way, weather you like it or not, and we couldn’t resist peeping at some of KC’s weather predictions.

Thanks to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Climate Prediction Center, we know what temperatures + precipitation trends to expect for Dec., Jan., and Feb. While exact weather conditions typically can’t be predicted more than a week in advance, accurate seasonal outlooks can help us prepare for what winter will bring.

🌡️ Temperature

Think warmer. This winter, Kansas City has a 33-40% chance of temperatures being higher than normal.

🌨️ Precipitation

About the same. KC has an approximately equal chance of seeing normal amounts of snow and rainfall this winter. Increased chances for more precipitation encroach just south of the metro.

By the month: December

KC’s average low-temperature in December is 25.5°F, but we might see more days this year closer to the average high-temperature — 41.7°F — because of the anticipated temp rise. DYK: December is the snowiest month in KC with an average of 4.4 inches + the month with the least amount of sunshine at an average of 4.7 hours a day.

By the month: January

Kansas City’s lows in January are 22.5°F on average, with highs of 39.6°F. January tends to be KC’s coldest month. However, we usually see the least snowfall with an average of 1.14 inches of precipitation. Predictions say we’ll see about that much snow. Bonus: here are the NOAA’s winter safety tips. ❄️

By the month: February

Historically, February gets a little warmer in KC with an average low-temperature of 26.2°F + an average high-temperature of 44.6°F — not including last year’s deep freeze. Anyone still thawing their nose hairs? February usually rains/snows/ices for 5.3 days.
