The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) offers far more than hunting and fishing permits — though these resources are part of their offerings.

Whether you’re a lifelong Missourian or new to the state, here are four surprising things you might not know about what MDC does and how you can get involved.

MDC programs are free

From kids’ nature events every weekend to hands-on clinics like nighttime crappie fishing, MDC offers free (and pressure-free) group activities and programs for every interest, age group, and experience level, like:

🍄 Foraging for wild edibles
🦋 Tracking Monarch butterflies
📝 Journaling among fall leaves
🛶 Kayaking
🏹 Discovering archery
🦌 Learning how to hunt + turn hides into buckskin

...to name just a few.

Wildlife magazines at your doorstep

MDC publishes two beautiful, full-color print magazines: Missouri Conservationist for adults and Xplor for kids.

Both are free for Missouri residents and packed with interesting stories, stunning photos, and fun facts about local wildlife.

MDC helps property owners, big and small

Want more butterflies in your backyard or a better animal habitat on your property?

Private Land Conservationists offer expert help through land management plans, native plant recommendations, and even cost-share opportunities.

Fun fact: MDC helps manage landscapes at both Arrowhead Stadium and Monarchs Plaza.

Nature is closer than you think

MDC manages 50+ conservation and natural areas, lakes, and other public lands across Jackson, Cass, Clay, and Platte counties alone. Read: No long drive needed to enjoy a few hours in nature.

A few recommendations:

  • Explore the Discovery Center in midtown KC
  • Hike Burr Oak Woods in Blue Springs
  • Fish in one of the many stocked urban lakes in the metro
