Ready to get groovy? Despite its rich jazz history, KC’s music scene has grown to celebrate all genres. Record Store Day is just around the corner, and we’re turning the tables on how you listen to music. We know KC loves its live music, but we’re bringing the party home. We’ve rounded up six vibrant + homey record stores that are in tune with your musical needs, plus we’ve listed some Record Store Day celebrations.

Mills Record Company, 4045 Broadway Blvd.

With a Music Releases webpage updated daily, Mills Record Company might just be the spot to visit if you’re looking for a specific vinyl. Check its website for the store’s RSD selections. Also, Wise Blood Booksellers sells new + used books inside the store. Mark your calendars — Sat., April 30 is Independent Bookstore Day.

Sister Anne’s, 901 E. 31st St.

Coffee and music? It’s the best of both worlds. Grab an iced Americano as you peruse the store’s diverse vinyl collection. Both 7" + cassette sections are also regularly restocked. City Editor Krit bought “After Hours” by The Weeknd, which was her first vinyl here.

Josey Records, 1815 McGee St.

With a 6,500 sqft location, Josey Records has made itself a destination for people looking to be plugged into the music scene. Celebrate Record Store Day by checking out its selection of RSD titles. Be sure to arrive early since doors open at 7 a.m. with lines that tend to form hours prior. Keep a look out for its First Friday events.

7th Heaven, 7621 Troost Ave.

Just about every music genre can be found at this store, specifically in the Vinyl Underground section. The store even has a Smoke Shop and a Love Shop. Check out eclectic items such as a life-size cut-out of Jon Bon Jovi + Kid Rock hockey jerseys.

Revolution Records, 1830 Locust St.

With an old-school vibe, Revolution Records offers new and used LPs, DVDs + Vinyls. Check out its large selection of books, posters + punk zines. If you do stop by, be sure to show some love to the furry friends that roam the store.

Records with Merritt, 1614 Westport Rd.

The intimate store offers a great selection of new vinyls. With kind + knowledgeable staff who offer free drinks, visiting the store is an experience. Find RSD titles on the website. If you’re looking to support local talent, check out the collection of local Artists LPs, CDs + cassettes.
