News Notes

Mansion Monday

Fit for a modern-day monarch, this gated 7-acre Shawnee estate blends old-world charm with new-world perks — think stonework sourced from a French castle, an in-pool firepit, and a beverage room with a full wine fridge and Miele coffee setup. Five beds, nine baths, and endless bragging rights. Take the full royal tour.

Number

72.2 million. That’s how many Americans are expected to travel for the Fourth of July, a 2.4% increase from last year. This includes an estimated 5.84 million people traveling by air — if you’re one of those flyers, familiarize yourself with Kansas City International Airport before departure. (AAA)

Try This

On the hunt for a luxe pool? Try using Resort Pass, a tool where you can find day passes to hotel pools across Kansas City. We’re eyeing a private rooftop cabana at The Fontaine.

Eat

It looks like Kansans and Missiourians both believe in the power of sweet potatoes. That’s the most popular superfood in the region, based on Google search data compiled by Eachnight. If you want to buy some, or see what other goodies are growing in KC, head to a local farmers market.

Drink

Ready for a twist on a classic? Good Housekeeping named the spicy pina colada the drink of the summer, which heats up the cocktail’s recipe by adding a spicy ingredient like chile-infused rum. If you’d rather drink something else, we think local happy hours are always on trend.

Environment

Stay informed about air quality this ozone season by receiving SkyCast, issued daily at 4 p.m. Like a weather forecast, it provides the air quality conditions expected for the next day and issues an Ozone Alert when an unhealthy amount of ground-level ozone pollution is anticipated. Which roadway is NOT currently being considered for a future streetcar extension?

69% of you nailed it — West 39th/Linwood and 18th Street are the only corridors currently being studied for future streetcar tracks. Meanwhile, Southwest Boulevard is busy with its own multi-million dollar glow-up: road repaving, sidewalk repairs, and streetscape upgrades stretching through summer 2026.

Take a peek at the first images taken by the largest digital camera ever built, the Vera C. Rubin Observatory. While you may not get quite the same view, you can explore the night sky closer to home with the Astronomical Society of Kansas City or Union Station’s Arvin Gottlieb Planetarium.
