Roll out the red carpet, food lovers (and watch the crumbs). On Jan. 24, the semifinalists were announced for the 2024 James Beard Awards — one of the culinary world’s most prestigious prizes — and Kansas City stars are shining bright.
You’ll find four local chefs, one restaurant + one bar up for awards based on excellence and other factors like commitment to the community. But it’s an honor just to be nominated — getting on the James Beard radar is a game changer for any chef or restaurant,no matter how long they’ve been around.
Mark your calendars for Wednesday, April 3, when the finalists will be announced. A Monday, June 10 ceremony in Chicago will reveal the winners.
Here’s the local flavor:

Here’s your Red Kingdom itinerary for the 2024 AFC Championship
Love, heartbreak, frostbite and… a shirtless Jason Kelce?
It’s certainly been an exciting postseason, Kansas City. So, in the spirit of huddling together for the Chiefs sixth-consecutive AFC Championship appearance we’ve compiled a shortlist of things to do for Sunday’s gameday.
Stop by Union Station for a shirtless Jason Kelce selfie | The unforgettable shot of his bare-chested cheering at last week’s Chiefs-Bills game is seared in our brains (and apparently Taylor’s too).
Stuff your face with red + gold | Sorry, the Andy Reidsicle is all sold out, but you can still get your hands on Betty Rae’s Chiefscake ice cream or Shatto Milk Co.’s Chocolate Cherry.
Stare at the big screen with other dedicated fans | Check out silver screen sized viewings at Screenland Armour or bring a bowl at The Black Box’s Chiefs + Chili watch partiy. Pro tip: Don’t (accidentally) fly into Ravens territory at Lew’s Sports Bar in Waldo.

Between the cold and the slowly receding sunset times, I’m as big of a couch potato as I’ve ever been. The one thing that can pry my Gen Z self out of bed in the morning? A run to one Kansas City’s delicious coffee spots. Not a coffee drinker? Check out Messenger’s London Fog for a low-caf option.
