Chiefs + Royals one step closer to voting victory

The Chiefs + Royals are one step closer to personal victory

Okay, it’s finally happened...the only thing that news orgs and your coworkers and the cashiers at the grocery store have been talking about for the past few weeks. Jackson County Executive Frank White Jr.'s veto of the stadium sales tax ordinance has been overruled by a 7-2 vote.

What does this mean?

It means that voters will get to decide. The 3/8-cent stadium sales tax extension will definitely be on the Jackson County April ballot. And no, the overruling cannot be overruled — this is (finally) it, folks.

How did we get here?

Well, if you’ve been paying attention to your favorite morning newsletter, you’ll know it’s been a back-and-forth game for the past few months. White wanted a signed lease from the Royals and the Royals have offered everything but, including a joint commitment with the Chiefs to stay in KC. The caveat? They’ll keep their side of the promise as long as the measure makes the April ballot and is passed.

It’s been curveball after curveball, but now it seems that Kansas City gets to sit back and watch until April rolls around. Perhaps we’ll finally see a signed lease from the Royals, claiming a plot for a new true blue ballpark.

No matter what the results are in these next few months, you can feel good knowing your trusty KCtoday editors will go to bat for you whenever the story calls for it.

Who knew there were so many talented photographers in Kansas City? You all submitted 160+ photos for our 2023 Picture of the Year contest and — we must admit — narrowing it down to just seven finalists was tough. See the finalists below and then vote for your favorite.

Finalist #1 Kaufman Center Moon Blast

Between the beautiful symmetry, unexpected color, fresh angle, and symbolic meaning (anyone else see a city united in red + blue?) — this shot was a clear winner.

Finalist #4 Nelson Atkins

Dark. Moody. Totally Gorgeous. All apt words to describe one of the best art museums in the nation... and this terrific image.

Finalist #6 Tulip Festival

Yes, this is in the KC metro. This beautiful shot features a tulip festival in Kearney where everything but the geotag suggests an international photoshoot.

Finalist #7 Union Station - Spring 2023

This new angle of an old favorite is anything but the typical and it certainly doesn’t hurt that it’s featuring our new favorite color... KC Current Teal.

From the editor
As I was perusing clicks from Monday’s newsletter (yes, we can see what you click on 👀 ), I noticed a lot of reader interest in The Rabbit hOle, the new American children’s literature museum opening in March.

For those of you who were curious, its website shares what exhibits we can expect to see when the hare arrives this spring. What exhibit am I most excited for? “Caps! Caps for sale! 50 cents a cap!”

Did you find your childhood favorite? Let us know.
