2024 Vision: Predictions for Kansas City’s next year

Come close. Closer. Okay, that’s too close, back up a little bit. Now, peer into the crystal ball with us to see what 2024 has in store... City Editors Charmaine and Madison already have. Here’s what they saw.
Editor Charmaine: The rise of non-alcoholic adult beverages will continue with more bars following Wild Child’s example. Experience-focused restaurants — like the high-tech Kura Sushi — will take center stage.

Which fad fashions will KC embrace?

Editor Madison: We’re a Midwestern city in the middle of the country — fads hit us late and when they do, we’re more concerned about following the beat of our own drum. A trend I’m hoping to start? Bringing back Kansas City Katz merch. This minor league team from the 60s has the koolest logo IMO.

What will happen within KC’s film + art scenes?

Editor Charmaine: With a new direct flight to Hollywood, the new MO Film tax credit, and developments like the Zhou B. Art Center, I believe all of KC’s creative industries are about to experience a massive renaissance.

Editor Madison: New year, new film commissioner… meaning change is surely on the horizon for the KC film scene. What am I hoping to see? A Haunting-of-Hill-House-style horror series filmed at Excelsior Springs’ (undoubtedly haunted) The Elms Hotel & Spa.

How will KC Current’s first season in their new stadium fare?

Editor Madison: If their sold-out season tickets tell us anything, KC has definitely already caught the current. Find me watching the first home match from the line for Waldo Thai.

What changes will befall the Country Club Plaza?

Editor Charmaine: I think the new owners will listen to the community and give the people what they want: walkability. I foresee at least one of the through streets being closed off occasionally.

Editor Madison: If it’s anything like the potential buyers’ Highland Park Village, we’ll see a mix of high-end luxury stores + one-of-a-kind local retailers hit the strip. My most devastating prediction: bye-bye Plaza tennis courts.

CHIEFS SUPER BOWL

Are the Chiefs going to the Superbowl?

Editor Charmaine: I hate to say it y’all, but I think the Chiefs may have to try again next year. Hopefully that’s just a smudge on the crystal ball and these setbacks are setting us up for a comeback.

A look at Missouri’s budding recreational marijuana industry

2023 marked the first year of legal recreational marijuana in Missouri. It only took one month for the budding industry to reach full bloom — the “Show-Me” state had the third largest opening month, trailing only Arizona and California.

Statistics show that dispensaries were able to carry that high throughout the year. Here are a few more of the industry’s 2023 highlights:
  • Sales surpassed $1.3 billion statewide.
  • Kansas Citian’s second most googled “near me” search was “Dispensary near me.”
  • MO became the first state in the country to expunge nonviolent marijuana charges. By December, the state cleared 100,000+ records.
And it’s just getting started. To be blunt, MoCannTrade predicted that Missouri’s cannabis market would bring in ~$1.3 billion and make MO a top 10 contender in the industry by 2026. Last year’s sales already smoked that prediction.

If MO keeps this MO-mentum, the state may soon take the top spot in the industry.

From the editor
My New Year’s resolution? Have a boring, uneventful, mundane 2024. The last couple of years have been nothing less than eventful. I just want peace.

I plan to take no risks and make no strides. I’m just going to enjoy the fullness of life as I live in the present.
