Your neighborhood is more than just a place to stroll. Take time this season to pour into your community — we promise it’ll come back around. Here’s a few ways you can make space as a friendly neighborhood Kansas Citian.

Pick up trash

Keeping Kansas City clean is more fun with friends. Join cleanups with KC Parks, Bridging the Gap, local Facebook and Nextdoor groups, and any of the dozens of neighborhood events happening near you.

Show local businesses some love

It’s no secret that we love to shop local. Not sure where to start? Check out your nearest local flower shop, record shop, or any other neighborhood staple. Remember: Not all love is monetary. Try leaving a positive review online for your favorite spots.

Give a dog a day on the town

Don’t forget our four-legged neighbors. Local shelters like KC Pet Project offer Dog Day Out programs, giving foster pets a break from the shelter. Even if your lifestyle can’t support a pet (yet), you may be able to provide one with an unfurgettable day.

Support local inclusive spaces

Ask how you can contribute to the Kansas City Center for Inclusion, our LBGTQ+ resource and community center providing clothing for trans and gender expansive folk, plus a free binder exchange.

Volunteer with local organizations

Check out our growing list of organizations with local volunteer opportunities.

From the editor
I spent my Saturday evening with a grocery bag full of popcorn, Cinderblock cervezas, and the froggy stylings of Jim Henson at Screenland Armour’s backyard showing of “The Muppet Movie.” I’ll be back for sure — $5 showings every Saturday is hard to beat. Meanwhile, check out our roundup of outdoor theaters and drive-ins.
