The National Weather Service has issued a Heat Advisory — effective until Thurs., Aug. 26, at 8 p.m. — for Kansas City and the surrounding metro counties. Temperatures are expected to remain in the upper 90s. The heat index could reach 107º. That’s a spicy meatball!
The Weather Channel ranked Kansas City as the 5th-worst urban heat island in a study of 25 cities a few years ago. That means the city gets hotter than the country. All that hot weather can pose serious health risks.
Hyperthermia, where body temperature rises too much, can lead to serious health problems. You can help spot heat-related illness. A person is in serious need of a cooldown if they have dizziness, a severe headache, a rapid pulse, an upset stomach, if they have stopped sweating + if they lose consciousness.
Between your health, your energy bill, and your ability to care for others, there are a lot of ways to remain mindful during these dog days of summer. Here’s the KCtoday breakdown.
🔥 Your health
- Reduce strenuous outdoor activities — best to save your run at Loose Park for another day.
- Minimize sun exposure, and check out sunscreens suggested by KC dermatologists.
- Drink lots of water. Check the UM System’s water calculator, here, for your recommended daily dose.
🔥 Your energy bill
- Moderate your thermostat. Every degree above 75 can save you 3% on your cooling costs. ProTip: Evergy has energy-saving discount programs.
- Keep your air filter fresh, so your AC doesn’t have to break a sweat.
- Close your blinds and seal exits.
🔥 Resources
- Send a list of businesses that act as cooling centers to anyone who may need it.
- Check out this list of swimming pools and spraygrounds around the city.
- Check in on anyone you know who may be at risk. The NWS recommends once in the morning + once in the evening.
