Spurred by a crafter’s worst nightmare (RIP JOANN Fabric and Crafts), many are feeling up a creek without a crocheted paddle. But do knit fear — we’ve stitched together a list of locally-owned craft store options to save the day.

One-stop shops

Scraps KC, 3269 Roanoke Rd.
Create responsibly by donating your own unused craft supplies before scanning the aisles for everything from deadstock fabric to classroom materials. Plus, explore the events calendar for activities like its weekly Textile Sip and Sort — volunteers leave with a voucher for 5lbs of free fabric.

KCAI Underground Art Store, 4421 Warwick Blvd.
You don’t have to be a student to explore “The Underground” for high-quality, hard-to-find supplies with sales like 20% off all Faber-Castell and 40% off all Liquitex paints.

Ceramics

Bracker’s Good Earth Clay, 1831 E. 1450 Rd., Lawrence
While its brick-and-mortar is a tad outside the metro, this one-stop clay shop delivers its high quality ceramic supplies twice a week to KC for $25 plus 2¢ per pound.

KC Clay Guild, 200 West 74th St.

This studio offers private events, weekly classes, and sliding scale membership options for artists looking to keep their hands dirty.

Belger Arts, Multiple locations

You may have wandered through its Crossroads gallery space, but did you know Belger offers four-week, six-week, and date night classes in ceramics and glassblowing? Editor Maddie can vouch for its wheel throwing classes (just don’t ask to see the final results).

Fabrics + threads galore

KC Maker Studio, 5331 Johnson Dr., Mission
It’s the unofficial headquarters of Kansas City quilters, offering an extensive selection of fabrics and classes for all levels of skills, including a longarm certification workshop that allows you to rent the machine in-store.

Prairie Point Quilt & Fabric Shop, 12116 W. 95th St., Lenexa

Sign up for this creative sewing center’s “Block of the Month” program, which sends you materials to craft a masterpiece quilt piece-by-piece.

Missouri Sewing Machine Company, Multiple locations

Since 1932, this local biz has specialized in top-of-the-line sewing machines and repair services for household and industrial clients. Plus, any purchase of their machines comes with lifetime support and free classes.

Yarn Social, 1707 West 45th St.

Crocheters, knitters, and weavers of all kinds will fall in love with this slice of fiber arts heaven. Working on a new pattern? This West Plaza spot offers a 25% discount on yarn purchased for such projects.

Stationary

Hammerpress, 1413 W 11th St.
Founded by a KCAI alum, this West Bottoms letterpress studio has been turning out gorgeous custom projects, posters, and cards for decades. Follow the bright yellow door to its shop, where vintage presses share space with stationery, home goods, wearables, wall art, and concert posters.

May Day Paper & Post, multiple locations
Editor Maddie here. My perfect day includes a bike ride along the Trolley Trail with a mid-stop to browse May Day’s stunning card wall, followed by a coconut alfajor + Café Bombón from next-door Café Corazón.

Supply Closet, 1639 Southwest Blvd.
Like Harry Potter, tucked away under the staircase, this literal closet-sized corner inside Garden House coffee shop is a wonderland of unique finds, described by one commenter as “a paper speakeasy.”

Truly Madly Depot, 5727 Johnson Dr., Mission, KS
It’s more a menagerie of colorful, quirky objects than a stationary store, but we’re including this mention for its copious supply of notebooks, pens, and chinchilla-shaped phone holders.

Various

ZventaBeads, 8837 West 75th St., Overland Park
Create your own accessories with gemstones, crystals, and specialty seed beads perfect for DIY jewelry enthusiasts. The shops friendly pros also offer classes and 1-on-1 assistance for designing your dream piece.

Bacchus & Barleycorn, 6633 Nieman Rd., Shawnee
Get started on your own craft label with homebrew kits for beer, cider, wine, mead, kombucha, cheese, vinegar, and soda from a local biz fermenting since 1968.

Hobby Haven, 10560 Metcalf Ave, Overland Park
Model enthusiasts can build their own experience at this one-stop featuring featuring radio controlled airplanes, cars, drones, and rare consignment collectibles.
