Hey KC — Editorial Intern Mac here. I don’t know about you, but one of my favorite things about Kansas City is our love for pets. Whether you’re looking for a new addition to your family or just want to help out some of our furry friends, here’s a handy guide to some of the local shelters.
KC Pet Project | Multiple Locations
With several locations around Kansas City, KC Pet Project serves as a temporary home for dogs, cats, rabbits, and rodents. Ways to get involved include fundraising, fostering, and volunteering. They even have a shelter wish list locals can purchase from to help with specific needs.
Wayside Waifs | 3901 Martha Truman Rd., Kansas City, MO
This no-kill shelter has its very own “Bark Park,” walking trail, and onsite clinic, so Wayside volunteers have a plethora of ways to help the animals. Adoptable animals include dogs, cats, and small animals. Other ways to help include donating and field trips.
Great Plains SPCA | 5424 Antioch Dr., Merriam, KS
With dogs, cats, and small mammals onsite, this shelter can use all paws on deck. An onsite retail store uses funds to support the animals, and you can also sponsor a kennel, donate, volunteer, or buy from a wishlist. The shelter also has a pet food drive and behavioral training.
The Humane Society of Greater Kansas City | 5445 Parallel Pkwy., Kansas City, KS
There are plenty of dogs and cats to meet here, but this organization also specializes in educating owners, running a pet food pantry, and promoting affordable pet care. They are also looking for foster homes, donations + volunteers.
Always and Furever Midwest Animal Sanctuary | 23595 W. 223 St., Spring Hill, KS
This beautiful barn sanctuary is home to dogs and cats. The barn aims to save unwanted pets so they may live in comfort and peace without being kept in kennels. All animals on-site are adoptable, but they are always looking for new volunteers and donations as well.
