City Council seeks input on renaming Troost

A City Council survey with origins in a community-led petition seeks the public’s opinion on whether to rename Troost Avenue.

Kansas City government leaders are considering changing the name of Troost Avenue.

In 2022, multiple petitions were posted to Change.org requesting Troost Avenue be renamed. One petition authored by Chris Goode, owner of Ruby Jean’s Kitchen and Juicery, gained traction last June and brought the conversation to the forefront.

City Council is considering changes in accordance with resolution 230441 passed in September 2020. This resolution requires removal of memorials and symbolic monuments of people who “enslaved persons, promoted racism, or participated in the oppression or dehumanization of others.”

In May 2023, City Council moved to obtain input from Kansas Citians on the topic.

You can join the conversation by taking City Council’s survey. Before you do, verify your city district.
