Do you identify with the word tsundoku? That’s the word meaning to buy books and let them pile up without reading them.

If you or someone you know is a book dragon, we have the solution. Feed the beast by checking out these new local bookstores in the KC metro — no library card needed.

Monstera’s Books | 7930 Floyd St., Overland Park, KS
Husband-wife duo Justin and Kate Wieners will open this plant + book shop this spring. The store will offer vintage vibes while selling new and used novels. Though the brick-and-mortar is still under construction, its online store is ready to rumble.

Seven Stories | 11109 Johnson Dr., Shawnee, KS
At 14 years old, owner Halley Vincent is currently the youngest member of the American Booksellers Association. Shelves are lined with books from different cultures and languages, curated by Vincent herself.

KC’s first romance bookshop self-describes as “an independent woman-owned bookstore nestled in the historic House of Flowers building in Union Hill.” Need an excuse to pop by? It’s hosting a 90s Best Author Mix and Mingle on Friday, Feb. 2, 6:30 p.m.-11:00 p.m. Tickets are $10.

The Pretty Posy | 7942 Santa Fe. Dr., Overland Park, KS
The boutique got bumped for books. The former clothing store will soon stock shelves instead of hangers, featuring books that cater to women + children. An opening date is TBA so watch its Instagram for updates.
