We don’t mean to get sappy, but KC is beautiful in autumn. This weekend is shaping up to be prime fall weather with highs in the 60s and lows above freezing. We’re singing, “the sun will come out tomorrow,” and we mean it.

The Missouri Department of Conservation has a fall colors tracker with all the goods on colorful regions, tree identification, and locations to spot the action. Combined with our own expertise, we’re branching out to give you 3 scenic fall drives for soaking up the season.

Ward Parkway | ~5.5 miles+ | Kansas City

We’ll start off easy. If you’re looking for something short, accessible, and with lots to do nearby, take a cruise down Ward. This broad thoroughfare is canopied by massive colorful trees. Stop in at one of Brookside or Waldo’s many breweries, restaurants, and shops along the way — it’s never too early to shop for the holidays. Extend your drive by touring Gregory, Swope, and The Paseo.

MO-45 to Weston | ~24 miles | Platte County

The fastest-growing county in the metro is also home to some of the best fall foliage views. The MDC agrees — this longer drive is worth taking. Starting from I-29 and ending in Weston, this drive quickly turns into a countryside cruise bursting with color. Fill your trip and your cup at one of Weston’s wineries, farms, or quaint restaurants.

Wyandotte County Lake | ~6.5 miles | Kansas City, Kansas

An easy 20 minutes from downtown, WyCo Lake is a nature paradiseand a color cornucopia — for the average and avid fall fanatic alike. West Drive + East Drive form a loop around the lake, taking you across the dam — with a dam good view. Pack a picnic for 1 of the many shelters, and stop by the Legends Outlet nearby for shopping and a treat.
