4 MDC resources you didn’t know you needed

Presented by Missouri Department of Conservation

There’s no better way to connect to our community than to explore all it has to offer — and MDC helps residents do just that. | Photos provided by Missouri Department of Conservation
The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) offers far more than hunting and fishing permits — though these resources are part of their offerings.

Whether you’re a lifelong Missourian or new to the state, here are four surprising things you might not know about what MDC does and how you can get involved.

MDC programs are free

From kids’ nature events every weekend to hands-on clinics like nighttime crappie fishing, MDC offers free (and pressure-free) group activities and programs for every interest, age group, and experience level, like:

🍄 Foraging for wild edibles
🦋 Tracking Monarch butterflies
📝 Journaling among fall leaves
🛶 Kayaking
🏹 Discovering archery
🦌 Learning how to hunt + turn hides into buckskin

...to name just a few.

Wildlife magazines at your doorstep

MDC publishes two beautiful, full-color print magazines: Missouri Conservationist for adults and Xplor for kids.

Both are free for Missouri residents and packed with interesting stories, stunning photos, and fun facts about local wildlife.

MDC helps property owners, big and small

Want more butterflies in your backyard or a better animal habitat on your property?

Private Land Conservationists offer expert help through land management plans, native plant recommendations, and even cost-share opportunities.

Fun fact: MDC helps manage landscapes at both Arrowhead Stadium and Monarchs Plaza.

Nature is closer than you think

MDC manages 50+ conservation and natural areas, lakes, and other public lands across Jackson, Cass, Clay, and Platte counties alone. Read: No long drive needed to enjoy a few hours in nature.

A few recommendations:
  • Explore the Discovery Center in midtown KC
  • Hike Burr Oak Woods in Blue Springs
  • Fish in one of the many stocked urban lakes in the metro

Looking for a new spot to eat? Here are three new restaurants in KC — fresh out of the oven.

Car No. 551, 426 Delaware St. | Deli
With Donutology gone, the vintage River Market streetcar is boarding a new passenger. The grab-and-go deli serves specialty cocktails, offers indoor-outdoor seating, and will eventually double as a micro event space for pop-ups + private parties.

1587 Prime, 1500 Baltimore Ave. | Steakhouse
Reservations are now open for the high-heat collab from Patrick Mahomes + Travis Kelce. Think of it as the ultimate off-season side quest — except instead of touchdowns, they’re serving tomahawk steaks.

The Indian Belly, 1084 W. Santa Fe St., Olathe, KS | Indian
Indian comfort food, meet fast casual — serving made-from-scratch staples in customizable wraps and bowls. On the side: samosas, chicken puff pastries, mango lassi, and mint lime coolers.
Oodles of openings

The Buy

Your must-have Halloween decor to celebrate the season, ranging from how cute to oh my.

👻 These three ceramic ghost lights are almost too cute to stand (and come with batteries).
🕯️ A No. 1 best-seller, this floating candle set will add flickering, cozy warmth to any Halloween display.
🧹 Floating witch hats show your Halloween spirit and are perfect for a party.
🕸️ The Addams family would approve of this black lace spiderweb cover decking out your mantle.
☠️ Make the neighbors do a double-take with a best-selling hands and skull set popping out of your yard.
But would you put this giant skeleton on your roof?

Games

The Wrap

Heads up for those going to the Chappell Roan concert — there’s no dedicated parking. We recommend you take the KC Streetcar’s “Pink Pony Express”. Union Station is a quick walk, we promise.

There’s a joke about “The Subway” in there somewhere.
