Plus, this mini art walk ends with an orangery's cat caretaker.

KCtoday_Kauffman Gardens

Hear that? It’s the sweet, sweet sound of (almost) silence. | Photo by @mikedayphotography

If I need to clear my head or reset creatively, I take myself on a mini art walk that ends at the Ewing and Muriel Kauffman Memorial Garden — easily one of the most peaceful places in KC. Tucked a few blocks from the Nelson, it feels like a well-kept secret: full of fountains, seasonal blooms, and just enough quiet to hear your own thoughts (plus the occasional hello from the orangery’s live-in cat).

It’s run by the Muriel McBrien Kauffman Family Foundation, in partnership with the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation. The latter of which also operates Kauffman FastTrac®, Real World Learning, and 1 Million Cups — programs that quietly shape KC’s startup scene, college readiness, and small biz community. Just one more reason this little garden feels like the heartbeat of something bigger.

News Notes

Ranked

Kansas City’s food scene just earned a love letter from Condé Nast Traveler, which called out our signature mix of smoky, saucy, and downright craveable eats. From Gate’s classic beef on bun to KC TurkeyLeggMan’s towering creations to cherry wood-smoked ice cream at Night Goat, here’s what Vogue’s and GQ’s sister pub had to say about the Heartland’s tastiest export.

Eat

Now that your appetite’s whetted, consider stopping by two local newcomers. Cosmo Burger has flown the nest, opening a second permanent location in the Crossroads with fries, boozy milkshakes, and housemade seltzers on the menu. Also, set to open soon: The Skyline Rooftop Bar perched atop the East Side’s deli-pizza spot The Combine. (Startland News)

Number

$100 billion. That’s how much an unnamed company may invest in a new Northland data center campus, dubbed “Project Kestrel.” Kansas City Business Journal suspects it’s a familiar player (just Google it), with plans for six hyperscale buildings totaling 1.8 million sqft — the region’s largest-ever development of its kind.

Open

There’s a new way to make a splash on the West Side. The Tony Aguirre Community Center just unveiled its outdoor pool, featuring a diving board, water slide, climbing wall, and zero-entry pool. Beat the heat with $5 admission for adults and $2 for children. (KSHB 41)

Community

Help write the Kansas City Public Library’s next chapter at tomorrow’s Strategic Plan Launch Party, 4:30–6:30 p.m. This free event invites community input on how the library can better serve locals of all ages — plus interactive stations, activities, and refreshments. RSVP to save your spot.

Announced

Longtime readers may remember the Kansas City Canaries, the city’s only chorus dance troupe. Can’t help but tap your toes? Join their upcoming workshop exploring the legacy (and legwork) of Lucille Ball on Saturday, July 26 — or catch the troupe’s Broadway Revue performance on Saturday, July 12.

Stat

678%. That’s how much our self-service ad portal’s returning customer rate has grown since this time last year. Discover what’s driving the acclaim — visit our self service ad portal for flexible options with zero long-term contract.

Post of the Day

Fresh look, fresh finds — new signage just popped up at Lee’s Summit’s Green Street, the future home of the city’s farmers market and event space. While construction continues, you can still get your local produce fix with our guide to farmers markets across the KC metro.

The Wrap

In the haze of the holiday weekend, I almost missed a sacred celebration — World Chocolate Day, which snuck by yesterday. I’ll be making up for lost time with a trip to Christopher Elbow in the Crossroads (but you can choose your own adventure), followed by a crate-digging session at Josey Records next door.
