News Notes

Holiday

The start of Ramadan depends on the sighting of the new moon. Mark your calendar for daily community Iftars starting Sunday, March 2, hosted by the Dialogue Institute of Kansas City. Reserve your spot.

Sports

Robot umpires are in training. The MLB is testing an automated ball-strike challenge system in about 60% of spring training games, including the Royals’ Cactus League debut today. Don’t get too excited — none of these robo-umps will be in use for the 2025 regular season. (Kansas City Star)

Festival

Tickets to the second Fyre Festival, “Fyre 2,” went on sale earlier this week. According to the website, a $1,400+ ticket will get you access to a currently unannounced lineup of musical artists + activities like extreme sports and wellness events — or, you could play it safe and just grab tickets to Boulevardia.

Closing

In case you missed it, Joann Fabrics is closing all of its stores — including its five Kansas City locations. After shopping the Joann discounts, you can find us hitting up local fabric stores like KC Maker Studio and Fabrics. (Fast Company)

The Wrap

While doing a little research for our jobs board, I found perhaps my favorite listings ever: professional mascots wanted. If the excitement of gameday gets you grooving, consider getting paid to attend Monarchs or Mavericks games as their official life-size bobblehead. You might even end up a Mascot Hall-of-Famer like Kansas City’s own K.C. Wolf + Slugger.
