Have you ever looked at a local spot and thought, “This place deserves to be commemorated?” Our city is full of legendary locations – many of which are indicated by historical markers. Historical markers reveal significant places, streets, neighborhoods, buildings, businesses, and cultural events from the past or present. Think: The Battle of Westport + the Kansas City Stockyards.
But not all significant areas get the attention they deserve. What about the Plaza Winstead’s where everyone got their first taste of a Skyscraper shake? Or the route of the record-breaking Royals World Series parade in 2015? (Truman Sports Complex already has an official marker) We want to put these places on the map — literally.
Rules + details
Submit your historic place for a chance to be featured nationwide on our historical marker map. Our favorite submissions will then be featured in our newsletter, where we’ll put it to a vote. Who knows? Maybe it will receive an official historical marker.
Submissions are open through 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 3.
Finalists will be selected by our team and announced in our newsletter. These finalists will then go head-to-head in a vote for our readers’ favorite. The winner will be announced later in December. No promises that it will get an actual historical marker, but it will be one in our hearts.

Construction will bring the center up to partial capacity within the next 18 months. (KCBJ)
Sports
The tide receded on the KC Current’s historic season + playoff run after yesterday’s 3-2 fall to Orlando Pride. While we won’t see the teal take the trophy, you can watch the NWSL Championship (Orlando Pride vs. Washington Spirit) at CPKC Stadium this Saturday, Nov. 23 at 7 p.m. Tickets start at $87. (KSHB 41)
Announced
Speaking of playoff contenders. The Royals have released their 2025 single-game tickets to the public, with prices starting at $15. Fans who prefer to watch at home may be able to stream games on Amazon this season, thanks to a newly announced partnership. Direct-to-consumer broadcast rights are still on the table. (KCBJ)
Watch
Read it, listen to it, and now, you can watch it. Kaley Cuoco is set to star in HBO’s newest comedy series, “Kansas City Star,” about “a semi-famous actress who returns to her hometown to work with a regional theater troupe.” And yes, the original Kansas City Star is aware + willing to share. Civic
A new jail has been proposed for a plot off 40 Highway, next to the existing Jackson County Jail — but plans rest in residents’ hands. Its construction is contingent on a renewal of a current public safety sales tax, a one-quarter cent or two-eighths of a cent, which expires in 2026. Voters will see the ballot measure during the April 2025 election. (FOX4)
Eat
A KC staple has traded state lines. Harp Barbecue, made famous at its original Raytown location, is now open in south Overland Park. The 12094 W. 135th St. storefront is serving up its classic menu of smoked meats and sandwiches Wednesdays through Sundays.(Johnson County Post)
Award
Donna Kelce hosted this year’s Pillsbury Bake-Off Contest and a KC-area home cook won the grand prize. Independence’s Julie McIntire, a local kitchen and bath designer, baked her way to victory (and $50,000) with a recipe for mini beef Wellingtons with smoked gouda dipping sauce. (Kansas City Star)

🏗️ Power & Light’s $10 million makeover

The region’s hub for nightlife, entertainment, and watch parties of all kinds will receive a $10 million facelift, announced last week by Power & Light District leaders.
The multi-venue reinvestment project plans to renovate the roughly two-decade-old Kansas City Live! Block with whole facility amenities, including:
An exterior canopy
Ceiling heaters and misters
High-definition ribbon boards + enhanced lighting
Individual venues will also receive improvements, namely:
A patio refresh, new outdoor seating for Pizza Bar
$2.5 million upgrade and expansion (near doubling) for nightclub Mosaic
New Latin-inspired venue, Besos y Abrazos, featuring dining + entertainment (replacing Leinie’s Lodge and Beer Garden)
Fans, fear not. While construction is not expected to finish until March 2025, KC Live! Block will remain open throughout the process — meaning your 2025 Super Bowl watch party can still look like this... perhaps with more hard hats.
