🏀 Keep the ball in our court

T Mobile Center
Fit for a KC Queen (or Monarch, or Crown, or...) | Photo by KCtoday
Just last week, we shared the rumors surrounding the WNBA’s impending expansion to Golden State, Portland + Toronto by 2026 — but its commissioner is shooting for one more. KC Sports Commission’s Kathy Nelson + Mayor Quinton Lucas were quick to throw T-Mobile Center in the ring, calling Kansas City “the perfect place” for a new pro team.

Now, thanks to a secret source for the Kansas City Business Journal, we have a few more juicy details:

Talks are already underway between KC Current owners, Angie and Chris Long + Brittany and Patrick Mahomes, and the WNBA about owning an expansion team that would call T-Mobile Center home. This makes Kansas City one of ~15 “legitimate” bidders for a new franchise.

If there’s one thing we know for certain, it’s that our small-market sports city can make room in its heart (and closet) for another pro team. With one of its potential owners locked in to largest contract in NFL history, we’re also not too worried about it fitting in the budget.

While the ball is in the WNBA’s court now, we passed the question to our social followers to see what they’d name our new dream team:
  • “Kansas City Majesty 👑 Continues with the royalty names of KC teams: Royals, Chiefs, Monarchs, Kings, etc. and Majesty is such a fitting WNBA name.” — @samuel_wolfiejr
  • “We got the Chiefs, Royals, our former NBA team was the Kings, we got the Monarchs. I feel like the Kansas City Queens is only fitting 👑.” — @domohampton
  • “The Current have been super successful eschewing that naming convention [...] maybe something outside the box like ‘the Smoke’ in reference to our culture of bbq and smoked meats.” — @chefskissdotgif
