A little backstory
In 1932, the Great Depression was in full swing and Kansas Citians’ spirits were low. That’s when Country Club Plaza staff dreamed up the Plaza Art Fair. It was the perfect way to draw shoppers, lift spirits, and support local art.
The fair was held on an empty lot on the southwest corner of Nichols Road and Central Street — where Tiffany & Co. is now — and 90 artists showcased their work. Prices ranged from $1 to $10.
Now, the Plaza is a nationally-ranked art event with three live music stages, 20+ featured restaurant booths, 240 juried artists, and welcomes 250,000+ attendees every year. You might say it had a little growth spurt.
Eat, drink, and be merry
The artists are the main attraction, but the food + live music are what make the Plaza Art Fair a beloved spectacle.

Answered: How to get involved in FIFA World Cup 26 Kansas City?
KC’s population is set to double while the World Cup is in town.
“One question I have concerning World Cup in 2026 in Kansas City is this: How can we as local folks be involved in making it a great experience for visitors to our city? Is there a website or some other way to connect with the organizers if one wants to volunteer to help?” — Reader David G.
If you wondered the same after reading our Annual Tourism Outlook recap, here are a few official ways to get involved with the effort:
As World Cup-related projects roll in, local businesses will get first dibs on proposal requests — just make sure to fill out the World Cup Business Interest Form by the end of this year.
If you’re down to do more than just volunteer, keep an eye out on KC2026’s career page. It’s currently on the lookout for a Director of Fan Fest and Events.
Huge thanks to everyone who shared their local craftsmen recs with me — the story is in the works as we speak. In the meantime, I wanted to share one of my favorite local artisans: Kansas City Mosaics, the creator behind Novel’s gorgeous wall art.
