News Notes
Civic
  • The Kansas City Council unanimously passed two ordinances aimed at regulating short-term rentals. One prohibits non-resident rentals, meaning the operators must live in the homes they rent. The other requires a registration fee and better owner records. (Kansas City Star)
  • The City of Lenexa will install two new electric vehicle charging stations at the site of the city’s first gas station — on the 13400 block of Santa Fe Trail Drive. Staff expect the charges to cost $6,000 each and finish installation by June 15. (Shawnee Mission Post)
Traffic
  • Crews are replacing the Blue Ridge Boulevard bridge over I-70 in Independence (next to Burlington) — which means traffic changes. The ramps to eastbound I-70 from US 40 and from Blue Ridge Boulevard are closed until mid-November. I-70 lane closures should also be expected.
Development
  • Arkansas-based Loloft is planning to open a new type of co-working space in Kansas City — combining offices with micro warehouse solutions. The company would provide smaller spaces + shorter leases than traditional warehouses and aims to open this year. (Startland News)
Art
  • Watch where you step. Crews plan to remove 40 floor medallions from the old KCI terminals and install them in various city buildings. There were more than 100 medallions total, and 40 pieces from Terminal A have already been embedded into the new terminal. (FOX4)
Kansas Citian
  • Metro native Justin Cooley is nominated for a Tony Award in his first Broadway show. The Olathe East High School graduate + 19-year-old actor is up for best featured actor as Seth in the new musical “Kimberly Akimbo.” Watch the Tonys on Sunday, June 11. (Kansas City Star)
Environment
  • Honeysuckle — we know it’s bad for the local ecosystem. That’s why Overland Park Arboretum & Botanical Gardens staff brought in a herd of 45 goats. The ungulates are currently munching their way through invasive species as a natural alternative to chemical treatments. (Blue Valley Post)

🗓 New month, new ins and outs

What’s in and what’s out in Kansas City this May

Photo of Union Station and KC skyline
We almost forgot what that looked like. | Photo by @jrw_shoots
Don’t get us wrong, we love everything about Kansas City — some things we just love a little bit less than others. Last month we told you what was in and what was out for April. Back by popular demand, we’re giving you the 411 on May. You’re welcome.

In

  • Seeing the inside of Union Station again. The NFL Draft was amazing, but we missed that beautiful lobby.
  • Bouquets from the farmers’ market.
  • The sound of fountains rippling.
  • Outdoor recreational sports leagues (we’re looking at you, KC Crew).

Out

  • Saying goodbye to our tourist friends that joined us for the NFL Draft. We miss you already.
  • Potholes. Thankfully, the City of KCMO is rocking and rolling on street resurfacing.
  • The sun creeping in at 6:20 a.m. The late sunsets are great, but it might be time for Editor Bella to invest in blackout curtains.
  • Freezing mornings and hot evenings. Pick a side.
