Wave your new banner. Kansas City Council approved a new official flag on Thursday, Feb. 9, 2023, replacing the previous design adopted more than 30 years ago. The vote was 10-1.
The new design retains the fountain-heart seal, created in 1992 by Patrice Eilts-Jobe of EAT Advertising and Design. The symbol blends the KC identities City of Fountains and Heart of America .
The 1972 “Paper Clip” seal fell out of favor, but the stripes remained.

The flag’s colors are also nothing new — previous versions also had red and blue stripes. The red represents KC’s warm-hearted residents, and the blue represents the Missouri River and prosperity. Juxtaposing the two colors symbolizes equality, and the white seal completes the colors of the American flag.
“As our city sees tremendous growth and success in recent years, I look forward to our flag being a widely recognized symbol of our community for all,” Mayor Lucas said in a statement.
