KCtoday_Missouri State Fair

Summer tastes like deep-fried funnel cake, IMO.

Photo via Missouri State Fair

It’s a tradition as American as apple pie — the Missouri State Fair returns Thursday, Aug. 7 through Sunday, Aug. 17 in Sedalia, just 90 minutes from KC.

I’ve got my eye on Tuesday, Aug. 12 for $2 admission, rides, and snacks with a canned food donation. Saturday’s Best of Missouri show and Jon Pardi (“Dirt on My Boots”) concert is a strong contender too, but let’s be honest... an appearance from the World’s Largest Rubber Duck is the only reason I really need.

News Notes

An image of a red jellyfish on a USPS stamp. The background is black, with a landscape orientation, and the writing "bioluminescent life" and "USA forever" written on the sides. The red jellyfish fills most of the rectangular space and is swimming to the right with its tentacles hanging behind it.

Which stamp are you voting for?

See that picture above? Imagine getting one of those in the mail. No, not the jellyfish. USPS is hosting a vote through the end of September to bring back some of its most popular stamps, with options including Pixar characters, American history, and birthday shoutouts. Have your say.

Mansion Monday

You’ve probably admired this 6-bed, 5-bath beauty while walking along Loose Park’s pond, and now it’s on the market. Highlights from this Gamble Group-listed property include a hidden room accessible by secret bookcase door, vaulted theater, resort-style heated patio with pool + hot tub, and yes, the neighborhood wiffleball field out front is up for grabs too.
Older generations are getting confused by the “Gen Z stare” — a blank and expressionless glance that usually conveys boredom, judgement, or indifference. It’s often done by younger people in public; if you haven’t seen it yet, be on the lookout next time you’re waiting at a local coffee shop. (The Guardian)

Listen

Beyoncé ended her Cowboy Carter tour with a nostalgic surprise, reuniting Destiny’s Child to sing a medley of their greatest hits. While we couldn’t be there in Las Vegas when it happened, you’ll find us performing the encore at Offkey. (Variety)

Pets

Our tails are wagging — it’s officially August, which is National Dog Month. The best way to celebrate is by spending some quality time with your four-legged friends, and we recommend getting out for a fetching visit to a local dog park.

Did you miss it this spring or summer? Lucky you: “A Match Made in Heaven: Katherine Bernhardt x Jeremy Scott” is still on view at the Nerman Museum through Sunday, Oct. 26. Thanks to strong community and educator feedback, the exhibition’s stay was extended. Check it out this fall.*

The Wrap

A friend and I tried lunch at NOUR’S, the new-ish Lebanese spot in Hyde Park, and it’s officially in my regular rotation. We split the Muhammara & Pita (that red pepper dip is no joke), and I devoured the Za’atar Milanese — plus an extra order of fries just to keep dipping in the garlic aioli.
