🚎 Main Street in motion

We’re nearing the end of the line — literally. With the KC Streetcar Main Street Extension close to completion, we’re rolling out our second-to-last stop spotlight: Union Hill at 31st + Main. Here’s what to see, do, and taste within ~15 minutes of the platform.

Travel back in time

Hop off the stop and glance east to spot the cherry-red TV tower rising 1,042 ft — a Midtown landmark first used in 1956 for KCTV broadcasts and still active today, with Kansas City PBS at its base. Modeled after the Eiffel Tower (or as CBS once dubbed it, the “Eyeful Tower”), it even flashed weather alerts from 1970 to 2001, with upward lights signaling warmer temps and downward lights cooler ones.

Things to do

While a walk around the neighborhood is always recommended, we know some prefer a full itinerary of can’t-miss experiences.

How do you follow a record-setting year? By getting stronger.

Take Pacaso. Their real estate co-ownership tech set records in Paris and London in 2024. No surprise. Coldwell Banker says 40% of wealthy Americans plan to buy abroad within a year, so Pacaso’s planned Italy expansion is big.

They’ve already made $110 million+ in gross profits to date, including 41% YoY growth last year. (They even reserved the Nasdaq ticker PCSO.) And you can invest for $2.90/share.

News Notes

Civic

Passed, vetoed, then overridden. A Jackson County ordinance about the future of the county assessor is heading to the November ballot. Voters will decide whether the role becomes elected starting in 2028, while Prairie Village residents will weigh in on abandoning the city’s mayor-council form of government. (FOX4 + KCUR)

Open

Say hello to Walli’s Wellness Studio — a bookstore-meets-yoga-spot in Mission, run by sisters Maddi and Lexi Heise (with shopdog Walli, of course). Open Tuesday–Sunday, the space offers group classes, personal training, nutrition coaching, and a cozy book nook with everything from rom-coms to self-help. (Johnson County Post)

Fifteen projects east of Troost just got the green light, thanks to city partnerships and EDCKC support. The $19 million investment is expected to create 1,400+ construction jobs and revitalize landmarks like the Workhouse Castle and Satchel Paige’s home — check out the full list of developments. (KCUR)

Eat

At Gildas Bar de Tapas in Shawnee, the real flavor is in the company — though the roasted red pepper almond dip and char-grilled lamb chops don’t hurt. This new spot near Wild Child and Hank’s Garage serves up Spanish-style small plates and conversation, the kind meant to linger. (Johnson County Post)

Sports

Welcome to “The Kingdom,” aka the new Kansas City Chiefs six-episode docuseries produced by ESPN, Disney+, and Skydance Sports. Premiering Thursday, Aug. 14, the series covers 60 years of Chiefs history, their NFL impact, and an inside look at the 2024 season. Watch the trailer. (FOX4)

The Wrap

Back from my bachelorette trip and newly obsessed — a friend’s Baggu bag won me over. You’ve probably seen the crescent-shaped cutie on your trendy Gen Z niece, but trust me, it lives up to the hype. I found the brand locally at Hand & Land and Duet if you’re tempted too.
