Inspired by The New York Times’ iconic “36 Hours” series, this is our fresh take on how to spend a perfect weekend in Kansas City — ideal for hosting visitors or rediscovering your own hometown.

Civic
They may look like ordinary trash bins, but 50 new white receptacles around KC are actually high-tech food scrap processors. Located at community centers, fire stations, and city buildings, the bins remove moisture and grind waste — a space-saving step toward easing pressure on the metro’s nearly full landfills. (KCUR)
Eat
River Market foodies, rejoice — two new spots are landing later this summer. Sushi Nami will open a second location with fresh sashimi and inventive rolls in the former Bo’s Kitchen space. Nearby, The Paella Mix will serve (you guessed it) paellas and sangrias in a Euro-inspired setting. Forks at the ready.

It’s not quite equatorial, but Kansas City’s blend of soggy heat and strong drinks makes it a prime candidate for Santa’s summer vacation. Find your own chill with Goat and Rabbit’s Xmas in July menu, just leave the spiked eggnog at home.

Sometimes the best way to fall back in love with your city is to see it through someone else’s eyes, and hopefully today’s 36-hour itinerary did just that. For me, it’s skimming every “must-visit” list KC lands on and reading poetic travel diaries like this one from the UK’s The Independent, describing our “wide, valley-like streets and cartoonishly huge cars” with fresh wonder. I suppose beauty is in the eye of the beholder...
