News Notes

The Word

Roy Blunt Luminary Park. That’s the newly ordained name of the South Loop Project set to cap I-670 with a 5.5-acre urban oasis. The name honors former U.S. Sen. Roy Blunt, who represented Missouri from 2011 to 2023 and was instrumental in securing federal funding for the project. (KMBC)

Mansion Monday

Want privacy and luxury? This 10,138-sqft Shawnee estate offers both with 14+ acres, a waterfall-fed pool, glass elevator, 8-ft revolving shoe rack, and a guest house with its own garage. It’s the best of upscale country living, just minutes from city life.

Arts

Calling all fabric fanatics: Scraps KC is hosting a huge everything-must-go fabric sale Thursday, April 24 through Saturday, April 26 at the old National Fabric Company warehouse. Expect fabric, vinyl, carpet, and upholstery finds — all for $20 or less.

Opening

Paul’s Drive-In, meet Paul’s Jr. The former KCK burger joint is resurrecting its staple status with a new owner after its four-year hiatus. Diners can expect the same menu with updated digs in the coming months, though an exact opening date is TBA. (Kansas City Star)

Shop

KC neon studio Element Ten, known for glowing up local spots like Ragazza and Sagebrush, has dropped its latest creation: a heart-shaped statement bag lined with real neon tubing. With five glowing colorways, it’s equal parts art, fashion, and conversation starter. (Kansas City Magazine)

Announced

Worlds of Fun reopens soon, but fan-favorite wooden coaster Timber Wolf is sitting this season out. No reason yet, but thrill seekers can still enjoy fresh touches around the park — including Mamba Green pops and new updates to classic rides. (Kansas City Star)

Closing

Cafe Gratitude is closing on Saturday, April 27, after 13 years of serving up vegan eats along Southwest Trafficway. Fans flocked to the comments of its closing announcement, sharing memories and calls for a future cookbook. (Kansas City Star)

Biz

Our Parents’ Gift Guide is almost complete, but we have a few spots left to feature your business’s product or service. Secure your spot just in time for Mother’s Day + Father’s Day.

Seasonal

It’s social event season — outsmart the noise of rumbling crowds and hear conversations more clearly. Most hearing aids have one processor, but these bad boys have two. They process speech and noise separately, so speech gets clearer and crisper. That’s why 540,000+ customers swear by them.*

The Buy

LED under cabinet lights, so you can finally have light in dark closets, above kitchen counters, or beneath shelves. The wireless lights turn on with a motion sensor and can be adjusted between five different brightness levels.

The Wrap

Between Tom’s Town cracking open The Vault and Common Tiger turning into a party-in-the-back pizza parlor, I have a few more reasons to go on a speakeasy scavenger hunt. Have a not-so-secret fave? Share it with me and I’ll only tell ~75,000 of my closest (online) friends.

Places change, names fade, neighborhoods evolve… but some things stick — looking at you, Sandstone.

97% of you nailed it: Sandstone was the OG before Azura Amphitheater hit the stage.

10% remembered that before Grinders KC slung pizza and hosted shows, it was an outdoor sculpture garden in a then-scrappy Crossroads.

65% knew that Knuckleheads Saloon was once dreamed up as a motorcycle repair and parts shop.
