A night day at the museum

Museums are the cultural hubs of Kansas City. Whether you’re looking to learn something new about the City of Fountains or plotting a way to spend your Saturday afternoon, here are 16 museums to visit in KC.

Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, 4420 Warwick Blvd. | Free
Even its special exhibitions are free to the public, meaning you can explore without your wallet — though we recommend bringing it just in case you’re drawn to the culinary artwork inside Oil in Linen.

Museum at Prariefire, 5801 W. 135th St., Overland Park | $0-$5
Soon to be the home of the College Baseball Hall of Fame, this south OP anchor is a natural history museum, discovery center + exhibition hall all in one.

American Jazz Museum, 1616 E. 18th St. | $0-$10
Located within the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum is a space dedicated to the sounds of Kansas City’s unique music scene. See what gave rise to the cradle of jazz and keep your toes tapping at the The Blue Room.

If I could will myself to wake up that early, I would be the first in line for the Ice Terrace’s season-starting skate.

DYK, it also offers weekly classes for kids + adults looking to beef up their skating skills (plus free admission and no-cost rentals)? We recommend joining Session 1, that way you have an air-tight excuse to stick around and explore Hallmark’s first-ever Christmas town square experience.

What’s the one KC spot you believe everyone should visit?

All the usual suspects made our reader’s top choices — many museums, historic landmarks, chic city districts — but we wanted to shout out a few more choices made by our local tour guides:
  • Lots and lots of food — Jack Stack, Slaps, Joe’s KC, Harry’s Country Club, Café Corazón, Boulevard Brewing Co. + J. Rieger
  • Truman Sports Complex
  • Kansas City Zoo
  • Knuckleheads
  • Powell Gardens
  • Cliff Drive
Or, as multiple of you tried to do, treat it as a trick question and take the KC Streetcar around town. We’ll allow this skirting of the rules, as long as you use our guides when you do.
