There’s something exciting coming to Overland Park.AdventHealth Sports Park at Bluhawk, aka the ultimate sports and entertainment destination, is set to open on Saturday, Oct. 26.
The impressive 420,000-sqft indoor sports park will offer state-of-the-art facilities for athletes, families, and fans, with a projected 3.8 million visitors expected to experience sports + recreation excellence annually.
You’re invited to the grand opening (10 a.m.-2 p.m.), featuring live demonstrations, interactive activities, and a chance to win fun prizes. Read: Whether you’re a sports enthusiast, a foodie, or just looking for a fun day out with the family, this is a can’t-miss event.
Feeling competitive
There are countless ways to play at the sports park:
Play like a pro on one of eight basketball or 16 volleyball + pickleball courts, a multi-purpose turf field, an NHL-regulation-sized ice rink, and six futsal courts.
Train like a champion in the 11,000-sqft sports performance training center.
Take a break from the action at Hawk’s Outpost, a 30,000-sqft world-class entertainment center, featuring bowling lanes, an esports lounge, laser tag, an arcade, sports simulators, and more.
Fostering a spirit of community fun
From training and competition to relaxation, this facility offers an immersive experience for everyone. By pairing world-class athletic facilities with retail, dining, and more, Bluhawk serves as a community and regional hub for sports, leisure, and fun. Pro tip: Its flexible event spaces could be the ideal venue for your next celebration.
The sports park will soon be joined by The Boundary — the second phase of the mixed-use development — which includes hotels, a movie theater, retail stores, and restaurants, making it the place to be for entertainment and activity.
While the sports park is expected to draw regional and national traffic for sports tournaments and events, the broader Bluhawk District offers locals an opportunity to join a vibrant live-work-play community with multi-family homes, office spaces, and healthcare facilities woven into the overall development.

Welcome back to the Kingdom. The Chiefs signed Kareem Hunt to the 53-man roster yesterday afternoon. The 29-year-old running back was brought on after Isiah Pacheco was hurt in Week 2. Hunt spent two seasons with KC, racking up almost 3,000 total yards and 25 touchdowns.

“Like an oil slick in the sun.” Check out Mill Creek Streamway Park’s newest installation: “Is It Water Under the Bridge?” Created by local artist Matt Dehaemers, the giant multicolored water drop came to life with 3,500 ft of rope and a borrowed WaterOne shutoff valve — on display now through December. Last week we asked “Which famous artist is not a KCAI alum?” and here’s what you said:
Picture this — only 10% of you answered correctly.
Regionalist painter Thomas Hart Benton did not attend the Kansas City Art Institute as a student, but was a revered faculty member in the 1930s and early 40s. You can find him enshrined on the KCAI campus.
As for our other choices — Walt Disney, Dennis Hopper + Robert Rauschenberg — all three were students to some degree. Both Disney and Hopper attended KCAI weekend classes as gifted teenagers, while Rauschenberg studied at the institute before attending Black Mountain College (Hey there, AVLtoday).
After calling for craftspeople/artisan leads, I’ve been inspired to buy a sewing machine to make my own clothes — starting with this adorable bag from indie pattern maker Blackbird Fabrics (similar to the very popular Baggu). My next stop: ScrapsKC.
