The next global travel destination: Visit KC’s Annual Tourism Outlook

The Kansas City Renaissance has been kicking into high gear these past few years — and the world is finally starting to take notice.

Maybe you’ve read about the “Lesser Known US City Set to Be Huge in 2024" or how our hometown is now one of “The World’s Greatest Places” — Visit KC wants you to know all of this positive press didn’t come out of thin air. At yesterday’s Annual Tourism Outlook, the city department offered a peek behind the curtain into the major effort that’s making sure KC continues to be a global travel magnet.

Backing the hype

Kansas City’s burgeoning reputation isn’t all just word of mouth (or Super Bowl wins) — here are some facts and figures you can chew on:
  • In 2023 alone, the city secured 384 convention center meetings leading to ~460,000 occupied hotel room nights. That’s an economic impact of nearly $428 million.
  • Visit KC achieved a record-breaking return on investment that same year: $135 for every dollar spent in the community.
  • There were 28.4 million visitors to grace the Heartland in 2023 — all of which spent enough on Charlie Hustle t-shirts to generate $4 billion in direct economic impact. We’re kidding about the shirts... kind of.
TLDR: Kansas City is holding its own as a destination for summer vacationers, sports tourists, and convention attendees alike — but what about international travelers?

Seeing the bigger picture

Kansas City proper boasts a population of about 500,000 — a number officials expect to temporarily double during the six games KC will host during the FIFA World Cup 2026.

With less than two years until kick-off, Kansas City’s sports and tourism offices are in the thick of preparing for the global influx. One change locals and international travelers can expect to see: a major overhaul of the Visit KC website, including new comprehensive language services.

News Notes
Announced
  • Due to high demand, the talk with Margaret Atwood (author of “The Handmaid’s Tale” novel-turned-TV-show) has moved to Unity Temple on the Plaza at 707 W. 47th St. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the chat begins at 7:30 p.m. The event is free but RSVPs are required.
Try This
  • Sss-something special is waiting for you at the Anita B. Gorman Conservation Discovery Center (4750 Troost Ave., KCMO). Tiger Lily, an extremely rare two-headed western rat snake, would be charmed to meet you. Stop by and see her now through Saturday, Sept. 28. (KCUR)
History
  • Why did the cow sit on the 90-ft pillar? No, it’s not a dad joke. It’s the mystery sitting high at Mulkey Square Park. Apparently, the bull statue originally grazed at the American Hereford Association headquarters in 1954, and has traveled throughout the years. (Kansas City Star)
Kansas Citian
  • If you saw Apple’s latest commercial for the iPhone 16 you may have heard something familiar — KC rapper Krizz Kaliko’s song “Genius.” Kaliko says he almost missed the opportunity because he kept deleting Apple’s messages, believing them to be spam. (FOX4)
Feel Good
  • Here’s a feel good story to get you through hump day. A little boy was given an early birthday surprise: He got to go to a Chiefs football game, his favorite (and the best) team. Watch the tears fall as his dad breaks the news to him.

Downtown, meet Midtown. The KC Streetcar extension connecting these two city sections is almost complete. In order to marry the two systems, streetcar service will be suspended starting Monday, Sept. 30 for ~four weeks.

During the temporary hiatus, the construction crew will:
  • Remove the existing tracks north of Pershing Road, construct a new track, then weld it to the existing line.
  • Replace expansion joints + pour the final bridge deck on the Main Street viaduct.
  • Adjust the Overhead Catenary System, the tension wires that give the streetcar electricity.
  • Install a real-time arrival sign.
  • Finish the new Union Station Northbound platform + shelter.
Want to be the first in line to ride the new rails? Subscribe to the KC Streetcar newsletter for fast updates.

Everyone has a commercial that is burned into their brain, right? Mine is the Geico “hump day” commercial. Every Wednesday, I hear that camel saying “Mike” and giggle to myself.
