Meet Autio: A collection of location-based stories perfect for your road trip

Boy, do we have a story for you — 11,000+ of them, actually — all conveniently located within one app that can serve as your new travel buddy. And just like your favorite local newsletter, each story comes in at ~five minutes + will leave you more informed about the cities you travel through.
Meet Autio, a location-based storytelling app. Let’s say you were taking a road trip along Lake Michigan. With Autio, you could listen as Academy Award-winning actor (and Autio co-founder) Kevin Costner regales you with the history of Chicago while driving through the Windy City, and later hear about the baseball team behind “A League of Their Own” while passing Racine, WI.
How it works
Boot up the app, connect to Bluetooth, and hit the road. If you allow the app to know your location, it will automatically play stories based on where you are.
Take a look at five episodes you might hear while road tripping from Kansas City. (PS, five is the number of free stories you get when you make an account, so you can decide if an Autio subscription is for you.)
Queue up history
Called “Gettysburg of the West” | Kansas City, MO | Listen to the story of the Battle of Westport — the same battle for which that section of the city is named.
“President for the Day!” | Plattsburg, MO | Learn how a Plattsburg, MO man once became President of the United States for just a day — unofficially, of course.
“The Who’s Who of An Old Jail” | Jefferson City, MO | This story tells about one of three maximum security prisons that can be toured today — and is allegedly haunted.
“A Misnomer Names a State” | Topeka, KS | Learn about The Kaw Peoples, who have had several names including the “People of Water,” and the Cansez or Kansa.
“World’s Largest Truckstop” | Walcott, IA | Hear all about the largest truckstop in the world — then make a pit stop yourself.

Another for our trophy case. Two KC metro men won big at the Paralympics — KCK’s Matt Stutzman took home gold in archery + Stilwell’s Brad Hudspeth brought home silver in wheelchair rugby. Time to puff out your KC chest. (KCTV) (KSHB)

Jack-o-lanterns aren’t gonna carve themselves. First, they need a vessel. Good thing it’s almost pumpkin patch season.
KC Pumpkin Patch (13875 S. Gardner Rd., Olathe, KS) will open for the season on Saturday, Sept. 28 and runs through Sunday, Oct. 27.
Pick your pumpkins, of course, then enjoy 60+ activities on your way out. Games like human foosball, rodeo roping, and pumpkin bowling will help round out your day of pumpkining.
Over the next couple of weeks, I’m going to try working at play cafes. First stop: Brookside’s Hümanette. Say hey to me and my baby boy if you run into us.
Let me know if there are any play cafes that you want me to check out for you.
