Hunt family history: Huge KC developments they authored

Major development isn’t slowing down anytime soon for the metro. May we present, Exhibit A:

A proposal for a 132-acre STAR bond district in Olathe, KS surfaced last month, but limited details left locals in the dark. Now, we know developers aim to turn Olathe Gateway — an area around 119th Street and Renner Boulevard — into a major entertainment hub.

Plans are still in the early stages, but VanTrust Real Estate’s preliminary proposal has already perked our ears:
  • 155,000-sqft sports arena with an outdoor skating rink
  • 8.5-acre theme park complete with a sensory village, train depot, and carousel
  • Six-story, 150-room hotel
  • Eight restaurant buildings
  • 30,000 sqft of retail space
And that’s just for 65 acres on the project’s southwest corner. No plans have been shared yet for the northern portion.

If you’re interested in hearing more, circle Tuesday, Sept. 17 in your calendar and attend the city council’s public hearing on the proposed district. You just might see us there.

Books, food, trinkets, oh my!

You’ve probably noticed them sprout up in your neighborhood over the past few years — brightly colored, freestanding boxes dotting street corners and front lawns, offering anything from paperbacks to canned food to art completely free of charge.

These community swap spots have grown in popularity — and iterations — since the original Little Free Library’s inception in 2009. Now, you can find 150,000+ of these brightly-colored book cottages in 120 countries — not including unregistered locations or the idea’s many offshoots, like the Free Blockbuster libraries.

Itching for a new read? Have extra food to share? Lucky for you, we’ve assembled a map of all the officially listed little free libraries and pantries in the area — plus a few special selections, like City Editor Maddie’s fave: Grandview’s keychain exchange.

This week, City Editor Charm and I are spicing up our hang out with a trip to Midtown’s newly opened Swifts Cajun Cuisine. I’m thinking its Cajun pasta with shrimp and scallops might be my winning order. Excuse the drool.
