Charm Chats: What can introverts do in Kansas City?
Stop by Afterword Tavern & Shelves to get your summer reading started. | Photo by @afterword.tavern.shelves
Hey there, I am a mom of a 21-year-old that does not go to the bars or parties. What do the 20 something-year-olds do to be social for introverts?? Any coed sports or meet ups? Close to Lenexa, KS if possible.
Thanks,
Kim the over-involved mom :)
Well, Kim, the over-involved mom, lucky for you I, Editor Charm, am also an introvert. It can be hard to navigate this extroverted world, but one of the things I love most about Kansas City is that there is a place for everyone.
Sports
One of the easiest spots to find coed sports is KC Crew. Its league has everything from competitive cornhole (for the contact adverse) to fowling (football + bowling = fowling).
Silent Book Club
Introverts come in lots of varieties. If your brand is a reader who enjoys parallel play, then have them check out KC’s Silent Book Club chapter.
Bring whatever book you’re reading to the specified spot and read with the group. No one will interrupt you to ask you what you’re reading or try to make small talk. Just like it should be.
Roll up to this Tavern for a tabletop game and a beer.

Tabletop gaming bars
I know you said your introvert doesn’t enjoy bars. I’m betting that’s because of overcrowded spaces featuring lots of loud music + talking.
Introverts are more sensitive to dopamine than our extroverted counterparts, and we’re continuously processing information. That’s why we prefer less external stimulation and tend to skip places like bars.
Are they searching for deeper, meaningful connections over fun activities? Introduce them to a social club. Local biz Redux Society has everything from light saber instruction to ballroom dance classes.
Editor Charm’s Marceline The Snuggle Queen is a Mini Aussie that’s always down for a meet up.

Doggy meetups
Have a dog? Then meet people by letting your pet do all the barking. Bar K regularly has Doodle, Corgi, “long dog,” and other breed meetups.
See, Kim? There are a plethora of places for your introverted young adult to go. If you or any of our other KCtoday readers need more suggestions just let me know.

Feel Good
Say happy belated birthday to the Kansas City Zoo & Aquarium’s latest (and longest neck-having) baby: Masai. Weighing in at 125 lbs and standing 5'6", the newborn giraffe was welcomed to the world on Sunday, June 30 by her mom, Makali.
Film
It’s a little early to look a lot like Christmas, isn’t it? Not at Independence Square. The area received a holiday makeover to serve as the backdrop for the new Chiefs Hallmark movie underway. “Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story” will be released during the Christmas season. (KMBC)
Listen
Kansas City barbecue is so good it’ll make your taste buds sing — and maybe even write a song. The “Burnt Ends” song perfectly captures the delicious experience.
The Buy

Reusable grocery cooler bags. If you’ve been rocking the same tired grocery bags for a while now (guilty), investing in some sturdy, insulated bags makes transporting groceries comfortable and more convenient.
I want to try Sushi Kodawari so bad. I think I’ll add it to my dinner club’s list. (Though we’ll have to split up into multiple groups since there’s only eight seats.)
To those of you who wrote in saying you want me to publish my dinner club spots — don’t worry, it’s coming. I’m just letting the list build up first.
