It’s winter and we’re all missing a little green right now.
Whether you promised to start saving money, shepherding the earth, or just simply wanted to shop small sustainable businesses this new year — we’ve collected a few businesses helping you keep your three R’s on the right track.
Zero-waste spots
The Greener Home | Shop the collection of high-quality, sustainable goods in its darling new downtown Parkville location. Our recommendation? Check out these eco dryer balls that look like Studio Ghibli soot sprites.
Green Utopia | Find something for every home + family need at this store founded by a mom and KC native passionate about living plastic-free. Forget Amazon Prime and snag no-cost delivery (for KC residents) with code “Free Delivery.”
Refilleries galore
Suds Refillery | Come one, come all empty bottles needing a top up. This refillery has a brick-and-mortar, but look out for its blue Suds van that travels to pop-ups across the metro.
SOAP Refill Station | We’ve sung this company’s praises before. Forgot your bottle? This refillery offers a free donation bin for anyone who needs a new container. Be sure to stop by their Oil Bar and craft your own specialty skincare creations.
Hobbies + home projects
ScrapsKC | Crafters know the dilemma of leftover scraps. This local spot dreams up a new life for the odd bits and pieces by turning one creator’s trash into another’s treasure.
Habitat for Humanity ReStore | Help fund homes for local families by donating your unused home project materials or by picking out a few of your own. Skip pricey stores and save money when you shop anything from appliances to paint.
Fighting food waste
Pantry Goods | Inflation is eating at all of our wallets, but that doesn’t mean it should cost the environment. This local biz uses compostable packaging that turns into nutrient rich soil within six months.
Compost Collective KC | This composting service picks up your scraps and does the dirty work for you.

Sports
We all saw that video of the water bottles at Arrowhead, right? Well, the Chiefs will have another chance to freeze their butts off this weekend when they face off against the Buffalo Bills in Patrick Mahomes’ first road playoff game on Sunday, Jan. 21 at 5:30 p.m.
Ranked
Here’s another history-making Mahomes moment — this weekend’s icy win made him the quarterback with the 8th-most postseason wins in NFL history. Now it’s not just the cold bringing tears to your eyes.

The Fountain Card — Your new pass for all things KC
This is the happiest we’ve ever seen anyone look for an ID picture. | Photo via the City of Kansas City, Missouri
There’s a new card on the block...
Aimed at connecting residents to city services at no cost, KCMO’s Fountain Card is now up for grabs. No ID? No problem — this municipal measure is a low-barrier process compared to state ID verification.
What does it do?
A card-carrying resident can access:
Community centers that require proof of residency
RideKC paratransit, tow lot, parking and permit services
Leaf and brush, compost + recycling drop-offs
KC Water’s municipal water services
City health department services, like retrieving birth/death certificates
The city is working to partner with local public libraries so that residents can use Fountain Cards to obtain library cards and as proof of identification to open accounts at local banking institutions.
I definitely did not pack on enough holiday pounds to get me through this winter freeze. My solution? Burning calories by eating and imbibing my way through KC Restaurant Week, Joey Chestnut-style.
The unexpected superstar so far has been Brewer’s Corner/Kitchen. The Inflation burger, Bayou Fries + a 13-ounce glass of Strawberry Blonde was the perfect pairing to watch the Saturday game from the comfort of a room with gas heating.
