The City of KCMO is on a mission. Flashback to May 2020, that’s when the KCMO City Council passed its Vision Zero resolution. Today, we’re unpacking this resolution, tracking its progress, and looking ahead at the next steps.
👀 What is Vision Zero?
Vision Zero is the city’s plan to eliminate traffic fatalities and serious injuries on KC streets by 2030. It focuses on increasing safe, healthy, equitable mobility for all Kansas Citians and visitors.
Now, there is a task force in place to start crafting a plan for safer streets.
🚦Action-oriented goals
Vision Zero’s list of action items include:
Creating safer streets across all KC neighborhoods.
Eliminating traffic fatalities and serious injuries by 2030.
Implementing low-cost + high-impact project initiatives that will evaluate outcomes + gather feedback.
Developing a long-term, comprehensive action plan to integrate Vision Zero practices into all aspects of planning, design, and engineering.

This initiative officially began in Spring 2021 with various pilot projects on the agenda. Multiple initiatives are already underway (or completed) including:
Intersection improvements at six locations with high crash and injury rates.
Traffic signal upgrades at 50 locations to improve pedestrian safety.
Installing speed humps at 50 locations in neighborhoods that submitted past requests.
Installing an intersection video detector for bicyclists at Southwest Trafficway and Valentine Road.
Improving traffic calming guidelines + options available to residents to slow traffic on neighborhood streets.
Plus, $1 million dollars from this year’s fiscal budget is dedicated to furthering the implementation of Vision Zero efforts.
