Development builds near the river with City Harvest apartments, Berkley Beer Garden

The northern bank of downtown Kansas City continues to be a popular area for new development as two more projects receive the green light.

Both will break ground this year, developers say.

In the River Market, City Harvest apartments will rise up in the City Market parking lot on 5th Street.

Kansas City Council recently voted 9-1 in favor of the 13-story high-rise. Days later, the Federal Aviation Administration cleared it for takeoff — quelling previous concerns about its height near the Downtown Airport.

The $96 million project will include 300-units on top of a multi-story garage. 160 parking spaces will be designated for public use and area businesses to make up for the lost parking lot.

“Once completed and occupied, City Harvest will not only increase City Market’s customer base with the addition of 300-450 new residents, but it will also contribute to neighborhood density and activity,” City Market spokesperson Sue Patterson said.

Down on Berkley Riverfront, the Berkley Beer Garden will bubble up across the street from the incoming Origin Hotel.

Port KC announced the development will be a 8,200-sqft, two-story restaurant and bar. It will be built on half an acre inside the area known as the grove (the part with lots of trees to the west of the pergola).

The new park amenity will be developed by The Thrash Group — the same folks behind the hotel going up across the street.

A groundbreaking is expected for late summer. Leaders plan to open the beer garden in 2024 alongside the Origin Hotel and the new KC Current Stadium.

Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum taking flight in Atchison, KS

Eight years after women attained the right to vote in the US, Kansas-native Amelia Earhart became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean. Nearly 100 years later, her story, success, and innovation is immortalized in the Amelia Earhart Hangar Museum.

The new museum opens to the public on Friday, April 14 in her home town of Atchison, KS — at 16701 286th Rd.

At the museum’s centerpiece is “Muriel,” the world’s last remaining Lockheed Electra 10-E airplane. The craft is identical to the plane Earhart flew on her final flight around the world in 1937 — where she disappeared above the Pacific.

The museum also combines STEM learning with history in 14 interactive exhibits. Visitors can explore Amelia’s careers through augmented reality, pilot airplanes in virtual reality, and explore the science behind flight.

Hours will be Wednesday-Saturday, 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Sunday, 12-5 p.m. Tickets are $15 for adults.
