If you haven’t heard, the Taco Capital of the US is right here in Kansas City, Kansas. But don’t take our word for it — ask Forbes, which describes KCK’s diverse Mexican population as “masters of all Mexican dishes.”

KCK Taco Trail pass

With 50+ local taquerias, restaurants, and markets across the city, Visit KCK created the KCK Taco Trail. The passport system provides foodies with a complete list of locations, ranging from authentic street tacos to Tex-Mex styles.

The food alone is worth the free digital pass. However, Visit KCK also provides prizes based on the number of places you check into.
  • Five restaurants: KCK Taco Trail decal
  • 15 restaurants: Jar of Tradición flavor by Spicin Foods
  • 30 restaurants: KCK Taco Trail T-shirt
  • 50 restaurants: KCK Taco Trail Championship flag + name in Wall of Fame
Since the trail started two years ago (October 2020), there have been 20,317 restaurant check-ins, 1,571 prizes awarded, and 55 trail completions.

What say you, Kansas?

Let’s hear it, Kansas. | Graphic from Kansas City Star
New York Times reporter Emma G. Fitzsimmons reported that Mayor Eric Adams, no fan of the Midwest, claimed “Kansas doesn’t have a brand.” Ope.

We know there’s a lot to say about the Sunflower State, including iconic landmarks, rich history, and that pioneering spirit. Now we want to hear from you.

What’s Kansas’ brand? Email us + let us know. We’ll share some answers in The Wrap later this week.

Health
  • Billionaire MacKenzie Scott (formerly married to Jeff Bezos) gifted $15 million to KC-based Health Forward Foundation. Travel
  • Hello, goodbye. Air Canada is (temporarily) halting flights from KCI to Toronto, just five months after resuming service. Eat
  • A 70-year-old quiche recipe is getting a classic KC twist. André’s Confiserie Suisse — in KCMO + Overland Park — is partnering with Q39 on a limited-edition barbecue quiche. The recipe includes brisket, sauce, provolone, onions, and a touch of Calabrian pepper. Plan your André’s breakfast starting Sat., Oct. 1. 🥧 (Kansas City Magazine)
Drink
  • Nonprofits, good journalism, and beer — what’s not to love? Crane Brewing released a new hazy pale ale called “Brewshound.” The beer will benefit The Kansas City Media Collective: a group of local nonprofit journalism orgs, like PBS + Startland News.
