History
In 1932, the Great Depression was in full swing and Kansas Citian’s spirits were low. That’s when Country Club Plaza staff dreamed up the Plaza Art Fair. It was the perfect way to draw shoppers, lift spirits, and support local art.
The fair was held on an empty lot on the southwest corner of Nichols Road and Central Street — where Tiffany & Co. is now — and 90 artists showcased their work. Prices ranged from $1 to $10.
Now, the Plaza is a nationally-ranked art event with three live music stages, 20+ featured restaurant booths, 240 juried artists, and welcomes 250,000+ attendees every year. You might say it had a little growth spurt.
Eat + drink
The artists are the main attraction, but the food + live music are what make the Plaza Art Fair a beloved spectacle.
Grab a bite + and a sip from restaurants like:
- The Granfalloon Restaurant & Bar
- Cooper’s Hawk
- Rye
Find your way to the music at:
- Polsinelli Main Stage on the Wornall Bridge
- Local Music Stage at the intersection of Ward Parkway and Pennsylvania Avenue
- Acoustic Stage at the intersection of Nichols Road and Central Street
