Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is making moves — and we’re not talking about his improvised passes or snow globe trick plays. We’re stepping off the field and onto the pitch for this one.
The Kansas City Current announced Mahomes as a new co-owner. He’s the first active NFL player to have equity in an National Women’s Soccer League team, according to the club.
Patrick follows his wife, Brittany Mahomes — who was a part of the original ownership team — along with Angie and Chris Long.
“Brittany and the Longs have done an incredible job building a world-class organization,” he stated. “I am excited to join another championship-caliber club as it continues to make history.”

According to NPR, they’re “one of the most unique groups around today,” and in just a few short days, you can watch them record an album — live.
Making Movies, an Afro-Latin/rock fusion band based right here in KC, will play at the Folly Theater on Saturday, Jan. 28 for a live recording of XOPA, their new album (which is really fun, by the way).
Developers are down to the retail build-outs and other final touches at KCI — which is now within “weeks” of opening, according to aviation official Justin Meyer. The actual opening date is expected to be announced later this month. ✈️ (Kansas City Star)
Development
The Overland Park City Council approved a plan to turn a historic church — at 8029 Overland Park Dr. — into a 30-room boutique hotel + speakeasy, with included improvements to the sidewalk. Permits must be obtained before construction can start. 🛠 (KSHB 41 + Kansas City Business Journal)
A port authority committee recommended tax aid for the renovation of two downtown buildings. Developers would turn the Scarritt tower — at 818 Grand Blvd. — and its adjoining arcade into 126 apartments and a grocery store. Port KC approval could prompt work this spring. (CityScene KC)

Eat

The Word

Correction
Foul on the play.Yesterday we said the Chiefs would play the winner of the Jaguars vs. Chargers game — which is a possibility — but they will actually play the lowest remaining seed in the AFC. This means the team could face the Baltimore Ravens or the Miami Dolphins if they win their respective games.

Editor’s pick: Two personal testimonials related to today’s newsletter (specifically, the Dry January story).
No. 1: I visited Brick River Cider Co. and tried the apple soda, which came across almost caramelly, like a apple-based cream soda. It blew me away almost as much as the gorgeous interior.
No. 2: I also recently visited Blue Bird Bistro for a special evening with my fiancée, and I can truthfully say the meal was one of the best I have ever eaten. Ever. Everything was perfect, and you should go there ASAP (oh look, they’re on Restaurant Week).
